HAM DUMPLINGS

Here is your free Ham Dumplings recipe, we found this in one of the books that Grandma had.  These make a great meal when served with a fresh Green Salad.  It’s a great way to use up those left over cold meats.

Chopped cold ham (left overs, you can use any cold meat if you don’t like ham)

seasoning (pepper and finely chopped sage or dried sage)

half pound of chopped suet (this can be found at a fresh meat butchers)

1lb of plain flour

I sometimes add some chopped mushrooms with the ham, or you can add apple as this goes well with pork.

First make sure that the ham is chopped into small pieces (if you add chopped mushrooms or apple this is the time to do it), put them into a bowl, now add the seasoning ( pepper and finely chopped sage, unless useing apple),  mix together, (I do this with my hands but you can use a wooden spoon).

Now lets make the dumpling mix, allow half a pound of chopped suet; to 1lb of flour, put the flour and the suet into a bowl, add a little water and mix together to make a dough.  Roll the dough out thick, cut the dough into equal portions.

Put some of the chopped ham and seasoning (and the mushroons or chopped apple into each portion and seal (I do this by closing the edges and then rolling the the parcel with the palm of my hands into balls).  While doing this, have a saucepan of water on the stove boiling.

Now place the dumplings into the boiling water (be careful not to burn yourself) and leave to cook for approxmately three quarters of an hour.  When ready serve hot with a nice fresh green salad.  When the weather is cold, I often serve with rice.

This recipe can be adapted to be a dessert by using the same method but, instead of meat use fruit, dried or fresh, when cooked as a dessert, the dumplings can be eaten on there own or covered with hot custard or ice cream.  Oh they are so yummy….

I hope you enjoy this as much as I do.
