Grandad’s Stew!

Grandad’s Stew!  This recipe has been written by Grandpa Rakestraw.  Grandpa Rakestraw lives in Colorado and has reached the young age of 96, and is still going strong.   He would like to share this recipe with you, as he says “it’s helped him grow into a big strong lad”.

Enjoy this free recipe of Grandpa’s, and remember good old fashioned cooking helped Grandpa to reach the young age of 96.

Grandpa uses freash vegetables rather than canned, but has he says,  you have to use what you can afford.  So he has worked out what you would need if you were to use canned vegetables.

Ingredients
15oz  of fresh  Sweet Corn  0r  15 oz can of Sweet corn can be use
1lb of fresh Grean Beans or 15oz can of Green Beans
1lb of fresh Tomatoes or 15oz can of Diced Tomatoes
1 15oz can of Baked Beans
lb of fresh Asperagus or 15oz can of Asperagus
4 tbsp Pearl Barley (can can use more if you wish)
1-2 large Potatoes
8 to 12 oz Hamburger meat (the leaner the better) (shredded beef)

Now all you need to do is put all the vegetables into a large saucepan and boil for approximately 10 mins.  Now add the barley and the hamburger meat, let it come to the boil and then simmer until the meat is cooked.

If using canned vegetables then just mix them together with the Hamburger until meat is cooked.  Don’t forget to put the barley in at the start.

This makes 10 – 12 servings (depending on bowl size).

If you wish to make dumplings to put into the stew, just take a cup of flour, half cup of suet, add a little water and mix together, until it forms a dough.  Take the dough and roll into small balls (size of a golf ball) and place in the stew, let them cook for about 20 mins.  You will see that the dumplings have grown in size.

Hope you like grandpa’s stew.
