Food Enzymes For Health & Vitality

by Michael Sellar

Every chemical reaction within the body cells is carried out with the help of enzymes. In a sense they represent the cell’s “life force”. If enzymes are in short supply or are weakened, they won’t be able to carry out their duties fully and the cell’s health would be compromised as would the health of the body as a whole.

Dr. Edward Howell - Enzyme Pioneer

Dr Edward Howell who died in 1988 at the age of 90 spent his life studying enzymes.  His research suggested that at birth we have an enzyme potential.  If allowed to become deficient, we are at risk of degenerative diseases. This enzyme potential must be preserved at all costs and not wasted by forcing the metabolic enzymes that carry out the chemical reactions in our bodies, to be diverted into the task of digestion, because of poor choices of foods that contain no digestive enzymes.

The Fatal Process

Dr Howell used this phrase to describe the practice of cooking foods. Cooking at temperatures above 119 degrees Fahrenheit kills off the enzymes in food.

Raw Foods and Fasting

The use of raw food diets and fasting have been used particularly in Europe as a means of healing the sick. Both preserve the enzyme potential and allow metabolic enzymes to focus on healing without being diverted to digestion.

Howell did not advocate an all raw diet. He didn’t think this would be palatable for many people. He suggested the use of digestive enzyme supplements with cooked foods.

To ease the burden on the digestive organs and the body as a whole I would suggest the following:

Do not eat more than you need to. Eating too much puts a huge burden on the digestive resources.

Eat less high calorie foods containing sugar and fat. Eat less refined foods and man made foods. Increase intake of raw fruits and vegetables.

Avoid foods which you like but you know don’t agree with your digestive system.

Consider combining your foods so that concentrated starches and proteins don’t mix at the same meal. This takes away much of the effort of digestion.

Drink eight fluid ounces of water up to half an hour before meals. Water helps digestion and also aids the metabolic enzymes.

All the above measures will help to preserve enzymes, take the load off the digestive system and ease the burden on every cell in the body.
